Training a Cat to Walk on a Leash

Yes, it is possible to train a cat to walk on a leash. The whole key to it is… patience.

We all know that a cat will only do what is wants to do, when it wants to do it, so you’ll need to be very patient while leash training your cat.

The biggest problem you’ll have is getting your cat into a walking harness. I would definitely recommend a harness over a collar, as it will give you more control of your cat, and be much safer for your cat should you need to pull your cat to you in the case of a rogue dog coming around. The video below shows a cat walking “jacket,” which are great, if you can get your cat to wear it. Most people have better luck with a simple nylon harness.

This video on cat leash training is a shade over 10 minutes long, but shows in great detail the steps needed to teach your cat how to walk on a leash…

Hope the video helps.

Puppy Growls or Snaps

Does Your Puppy Growl or Snap at You?

If you’ve tried to take a toy, or perhaps a bone, away from your puppy to save it for another time, you may get an unpleasant surprise… he may growl, or even snap at you.

That is a behavior that must be stopped right away! This is generally a behavior that will not correct itself with time. You must correct it immediately for your safety, as well as the safety of others, especially children that may come in contact with your dog.

Here’s a video telling you how to correct an aggressive puppy to stop him from biting or growling…

I know, it seems kind of cruel, but puppy aggression is very serious, and needs to be addressed in a way where the behavior stops immediately.

How to Stop Neighbors Dog Barking

How to Stop Neighbors Dog From Barking

Nuisance barking can be a real problem… especially if the excessive barking is coming from your neighbors dogs, not yours.

You have no control over the barking… you can’t let the neighbor’s dog in, you can’t train their dog, you just get to listen to them barking all day… and all night.

One of my friends had this exact problem. His neighbor’s dog was barking at all hours of the night, every night. (Best he could figure, the neighbors dog was barking at the wind.)

He tried the PetSafe Outdoor Bark Control system. It look like a birdhouse, and he just attached it to his fence, right near the dog run next door. It emits an annoying (to dogs) radio sound that only dogs can hear, and reacts each time it hears a bark.

Here’s what he told me happened as he watched the neighbors dog from his upstairs bedroom after installation:

  • Day 1 – Each time the dog barked, he would kind of turn his head in curiosity at the sound of the tone. The barking ceased almost immediately, and my friend enjoyed a couple days of peace and quiet, with just an occasional bark here and there.
  • Day 3 – My friend thinks the neighbors dog was trying to “wear out” the bark control device. For a couple hours, the dog kept barking hoping the sound would eventually go away, but it didn’t, and my friend and his family now have a normal life, and are able to sleep at night.

Here’s a video from PetSafe showing how the bark control system works…

Training a Cat to Shake Hands

How to Train a Cat to Shake Hands (or Paws)

Who said cats can’t do tricks?

“Dog people” like to pick on “cat people” because they say that you can’t teach a cat tricks. Heck, my cat is a better dog than most of the dogs I’ve had (she growls whenever someone comes to the door.)

Here’s a neat cat trick that’s really pretty easily trained to your cat… as long as you have a treat your cat is interested in.
It’s a neat video showing you how to train your cat to shake hands…

Cats can be hard to train, but with a little persistence, it can be done.

Have fun!
